The Luigi Ghirri Foundation was established in 2025 as a non-profit organisation, with the aim of fostering, promoting and disseminating expressions of culture, photography, art and design, with particular reference to the artistic work of Luigi Ghirri. The foundation works in collaboration with cultural institutions, museums, academies and other national and international organisations, and oversees activities aimed at promoting the artist’s work and contemporary visual culture in dialogue with new generations.
Our headquarters are located at the Ghirri family home in Roncocesi, in the outskirts of Reggio Emilia, which was the photographer’s last residence and studio.
It was here, in an old abandoned barn near the house, that Luigi Ghirri dreamed of creating La casa e le stagioni, a place dedicated to the arts, where he could invite friends, colleagues, young artists, to create exhibitions and share sounds, words, images and imaginaries. A place where, as Giorgio Messori wrote, «one could still perceive the seasons, the flowers that bloom and wither, the things that die only to be reborn. Luigi believed that if many people are unhappy today, it is because they live outside the rhythm of the seasons.»
The Foundation therefore aims to preserve and revitalise this legacy, promoting not only Ghirri’s work but, above all, the convivial, collective and shared nature of making art, in keeping with his desire to create an open space for artists and the community.
Archival documents, correspondence, press reviews and Luigi Ghirri’s personal library are preserved here, while the entire archive of original film photographs is held at the Panizzi Library in Reggio Emilia, available for consultation by appointment.
